I've never heard it sung like this

Of course, I was taught it in primary school by white folks who probably never knew anyone who was a generation away from being a slave.

AS opposed to these who may actually have been slaves.



Because I didn't know about the National Jukebox until I saw it at Bredas place, so thank you Mrs Librarian!

  1. I enjoyed it and posted. As a child, I did hear it sung in a similar manner. I've always loved their spirituals and those who sang them.

    I hope you don't mind that I'm going to swipe this for a post. I've been doing a series on the music of Mali, discussing how African music was carried across the Atlantic in the slave trade, evolved in isolation during the age of sail, and then reflected back to influence modern African music.

    The way the vocals were put together reminded me a little of how Salif Keita will do a similar thing with his back-up singers.
