    An acquaintance taking a commercial art class - who was also an insufferable Trekkie - proudly showed me his latest creation, a poster-sized and fanciful Enterprise bridge filled with alien creatures. It was very beautifully done. It was due the very next day.

    Across the bottom was a prominent caption:

    CAPTIAN'S LOG: [some meaningless number]

    I hardly had the heart to tell him.
