Like how we can't understand the way bowing somehow makes you the superior leader.
Or how rebuffing long time allies while knob=polishing our enemies enhances our standing on the world stage.
BUT....I'm sure a 7th century Afghani tribesman who would be lucky to be barely literate whould see the immediate underlying goal of being paid not to fight you.
I *know* he'd understand that you're doing this from a position of streingth, because that's what he's do to someone in his power.
