It sounds like what's called "swamp fever" in my neck of the woods. The initial symptoms may be never noticed, but when the immune system is compromised enough, a slight respiratory infection turns deadly.
If you have other horses, have them checked for infection. If it's truly EIA, there is no vaccination, and any horse that survives must be quarantined, or put down.
